What Is a Non-Capacitor Generator?

A capacitor has two functions in a generator, to induce voltage into the rotor and to regulate voltage. In the past, all generators were capacitor generators. A capacitor is similar to a battery in that it accumulates electric charge when it connects to a power source.

Some generators can operate without a capacitor because another component can regulate the voltage. This regulation becomes the function of the automatic voltage regulator.

What Is an Automatic Voltage Regulator?

An Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) is an electronic device for automatically maintaining generator output terminal voltage at a set value under varying load and operating temperature.

How Do AVRs Work?

Automatic Voltage Regulators smooth out the load and RPM fluctuations to generate more consistent power than a standard generator alternator without inverting to DC. AVRs use a method to improve the voltage regulation by creating additional excitation of an alternator.

AVRs compare the rectified output of a voltage transformer, which is proportional to the terminal voltage of the generator, with the reference voltage and generate an error signal equal to their difference. They then supply that signal to the exciter field.

A capacitor is used to excite the field of the alternator externally, leading to delays and drop times. AVR generators are not inverter generators either. Though they share similar functions and applications, AVR generators are portable generators. AVR generators are cheaper but louder than most inverter generators.
